abstract:
The authors provide a new edition of the translations into Logudorese and Campidanese Sardinian of the Gospel according to Matthew, which appeared first in 1858 and 1860 in London, thanks to Giovanni Spano and Federigo Abis respectively, and were printed only in 250 copies. The translations took part of a project devised and carried on by Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte, who wanted to document living European languages, for comparative purposes, through biblical texts translations: his main interest was for less known or studied languages.
In the introduction of the book, Giovanni Lupinu shows that Prince Bonaparte was an important pioneer in the field of Basque, English, Italian and Sardinian dialectology, who deserves a much better treatment than he has received in modern works of history of linguistics.
