Abstract:
The effects of dietary non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) were studied on 20 Sarda ewes (BW 42.5±3.9 kg) in mid-lactation (89±1 d). They were divided into 2 groups and fed 400 g/d of chopped alfalfa hay and pellets ad libitum
in metabolic cages. The pellets differed in NFC
concentration (36% of DM: group NFC36; 23% of DM: group NFC23), due to the substitution of cereal grains with soybean hulls. DM intake was very high throughout the experiment, with larger
values (P<0.01) for NFC23 (2943 g/d) than for NFC36 (2593 g/d). DM digestibility was higher in NFC36 than in NFC23 (68.4% vs. 62.9%, P<0.001), while the contrary occurred for NDF digestibility (52.9% vs. 56.1%, P<0.05). NE intake did not significantly differ between groups.Dietary NFC concentration negatively affected milk yield (1926 ml/d vs. 2143 ml/d; P<0.01) and positively affected milk protein (4.81% vs. 4.68%; P<0.09). Milk fat did not differ between groups (5.19% vs. 5.06%; P>0.1). Milk urea was lower in NFC36- than in NFC23-group (57 mg/dl vs. 65 mg/dl; P<0.001). Body fat tended to increase more in the NFC36- than in NFC23-
group (P>0.1). Overall, the high dietary NFC concentration had negative effects on milk yield in
ewes in mid-lactation
