Abstract:
Purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical effects and intraoperative and
postoperative pain relief of caudal epidural administration of an association of lidocaine (0,15
mg/Kg) and fentanyl (0,50 μg/Kg) in the surgery of the lower uro-genital tract in mares. Onset
time for anaesthesia was 13' ± 6'. Mean duration of analgesia was 154' ± 17'. No mare showed
sign of excitation or sedation. No important variation were observed in the cardiac and
pulmonary parameters and no mare showed urinary retention. Epidural administration of the
association of lidocaine and fentanyl induced long-lasting perineal analgesia without
cardiovascular effects. The association of fentanyl to lidocaine is safe, improves the quality and
prolongs duration of analgesia, making surgery of the caudal regions of the horse easier.
