The essay shows an ongoing case study, related to scientific research as a development
driving force for local development in marginal areas of inner Sardinia. The studied project
regards the hypothesis of realization of the new Einstein Telescope, based on the former
mining site of Sos Enattos. The essay explores some forms of marginality in the local
context of the designed research infrastructure, some opportunities related to the local
conditions (even due to abandonment), some expected output, and some hypotheses of
different kinds of impacts of the research infrastructure on the local and regional communities,
under different points of view: scientific, economic, cultural, social. The discussion
on the different hypotheses, scenarios and expected results could imply different
decisions and other related projects of local and regional development.
