Abstract:
This paper presents the first results of a series of radiocarbon dating on no. 4 samples selected from the stratigraphic levels of the Phoenician phases of the settlement of Sulky (Sant’Antioco, Sardinia) and no. 1 sample from the local tophet sanctuary. The data obtained are analysed from a contextual point of view, through the examination of the relevant archaeological documentation and the materials associated with the samples. The results are discussed in
preliminary form, within the framework of the earliest Phoenician presence in Sardinia – also in relation to the local substratum – and in the context of a general chronological review covering all Mediterranean and Atlantic regions during the first centuries of the 1st millennium BC. Calibrated dates from Sulky seem to confirm a full development
of the Phoenician horizons as early as the second quarter of the 8th century BC, namely in the decades 780-760 BC, although the question of an initial occupation of the area, in an even earlier phase between the end of the 9th and the first two decades of the 8th century BC, in a form and manner to be ascertained through future research,
remains open.
