Riprese oraziane nella Gigantomachia del carme 6 di Sidonio Apollinare

In the Gigantomachy sung by Orpheus in Poem 6 (Preface to the Panegyric in honor of Avitus) by Sidonius Apollinaris, elements of different literary origins converge: conspicuous are the suggestions from Ovid and Claudian, but single traits borrowed from other poets are not less significant – specifically from Horace, an author whose presence in Sidonius’ work is quite frequent and incisive.
In particular, the Horatian reflection in carm. 3, 4, 65 ff. (vis consili expers mole ruit sua; /vim temperatam di quoque provehunt / in maius; idem odere vires /omne nefas animo moventis), inserted by the poet to comment on the Giants' insane act of pride, in Sidonius’ carm. 6, 15 ff. undergoes a lexical and syntactical conversion, and is exploited to convey a different meaning relating to the current political circumstances.
