The author examines the prospects of balancing market and competition rules with right of mobility, with attention to the needs of islands. A peculiar attention is given to the case of Sardinia, at the moment facing uncertainties in order to maintain appropriate scheduled air services and maritime connections. The paper deals with the context of establishing public service obligations.
