Minima nova epigraphica dalla catacomba di Sant’Antioco

The particular attention, which has been paid by scholars to the documents of late antique masons’ marks during the latest years, requires the inclusion of the Sardinian finds in the sequence of evidences of
this class of abbreviations. The character of these abbreviations is very differentiated, but it can be related to the activity of marble cutters in the quarries. A mark consisting of two Greek letters has been in fact found a short time ago on the lower edge of a column shaft of Proconnesian marble in the room dedicated to the burial of the Holy Antiochus in the homonymous catacomb in Sardinia. We inted to analyze here this evidence in relation to the similar record of the paleoByzantine world. It appears at this moment as one of the most distant examples from the origin of this marble, like a mason’s mark on a block, always in Proconnesian marble, reused in the medieval basilica of Holy Gavinus in Porto Torres. Finally, in the same catacomb, we want to underline the presence of a graffito, which is also unpublished, written in lowercase Greek letters on a reused marble object, probably attributable to the middleByzantine phase of the church of Holy Antiochus.
