Dental amalgam and mercury
Amalgam used for restorative dentistry has been negatively blamed for its mercury content. A high number of researches pointed out that some factors may bring to a mercury release from dental fillings thus raising concern for public health safety. Aim of this study is to point out that information are lacking and that health damages are still to be proven. Unfortunately, amalgam remains a valid restorative material but is destined to disappear from dental care. This assertion stems from daily experience, because of its low cost and because other dental materials are very expensive in comparison to amalgam. Amalgam is the restorative material of choice for posterior teeth and for not collaborating patients treated under general anesthesia. For those patients it is impossible to perform periodic controls and it is difficult to choose a material different from amalgam that allows to restore extensively decayed teeth in a relatively short time.
