Preservation and valorisation of historical buildings: a method to verify the sustainable re-use of transformations

The conservation and reuse of historic buildings creates a contradictory condition
because the new functions require an adjustment that, often, produces important modifications
of the historic buildings. The theory of restoration, in recent years, questions about what is the
most appropriate way to intervene. In the case of reuse, the rules of law require compliance with
technical requirements that the historical building does not allow. Then, it becomes important
prior check out new functions that the building admits without losing its historical character.
The paper presents a reflection the puts its questions in the theory of restoration and search for
answers through the technical tools of intervention. The guidelines presented, develop a methodology
for the reuse according to the operational criteria contained in the rules of law, respecting
the value of historic buildings. According to us, the preliminary assessment of the new functions
ensures that the balance between conservation and reuse.
