Facing the collapse of the GDR, Brandt took a position that appeared much more similar to Helmut Kohl's conservative government than his own party's, as he was promoting rapid and almost immediate unification. Though, it appears that this choice was dependant on specific expectastions about the evoluotion of the world order - which were disappointed very soon. During his last days, Brandt made some very critical and verybitter statements on that subject.
