Rotta atlantica della clandestinità: la risposta delle Canarie / Battino, Silvia. - (2013), pp. 14-25.
abstract:
This paper aims to present the reality of the illegal immigration phenomenon experienced
by a border region of Southern Europe: the Canary Islands. In this last decade, the
Archipelago has seen the arrival of irregular peoples by sea particularly from neighboring
African countries: sub-Saharan aboard small boats crossing the Atlantic to reach Europe.
The Islands were then transformed from a place of emigration to one of arrival towards
transoceanic migration routes. Thus, many were and are the regulatory and organizational
efforts realized by central government, the Autonomous Islands and the various local
associations, in order to manage the phenomenon both for the control of the sea, both for
immigrant’s hospitality.
