abstract:
Tourism, which has become a real social phenomenon, required more and more availability of environmental resources. Thus, the tourist industry represents one of the major economic activities that significantly contribute to the transformations of the landscape in general, actually it transforms the most beautiful ones. In the past fifty years, in the Sardinia island the growing demand for beach tourism put to the test some of its coastal areas because of significant presence of accommodation facilities and recreational activities. In addition, the presence of private homes for the holidays also produced a massive and intensive urbanization. After an extensive introduction about the geographical value of the second homes phenomenon, the present work deals with the phenomenon itself, under a quantitative point of view, in Gallura. This is an historical region of the Sardinia north-east where the supply and demand of tourism are very important. Furthermore, the distribution of the most significant places for the presence of these temporary accommodations has been observed using digital cartography, whereas the process of coastline urbanization has been studied, with some exemplification over its historical evolution by means of the orthophotos of Sardinia’s region.
