The myth of unlimited economic growth that now lies in pieces shows us that capitalism is not a valid principle for social organisation. The unfettered quest for sheer profit destroys the social and cultural foundations of the community. The traditional ethical motivations on which the entrepreneurial spirit is based must today be re-examined in the light of a new ethos: one based on the rise of organisations the cornerstone of which is solidarity. These non-profit and civic bodies are as creative, original and responsible as any profit seeking enterprise, and in many cases are more so.
