La tomba n. 3 di Iloi. Sedilo 6

Book
Publication Date:
1998
Short description:
La tomba n. 3 di Iloi. Sedilo 6 / Melis, Maria Grazia. - (1998), pp. 1-189.
abstract:
Tomb 3 of Iloi.
The stratigraphic investigation of Tomb 3 at Iloi is part of the multi-disciplinary research Progetto Iloi, coordinated and directed by prof. Giuseppa Tanda of the University of Sassari over several years. The results are being published in eight volumes, of which this monograph is the sixth.
The necropolis, known as Ispiluncas was published under the same name in the first volume of the Progetto Iloi. The cemetery consists of 33 “domus de janas” and it lies on the southern slope of the plateau of Sedilo. Nuraghe Iloi and two Giants tombs stand a few hundred metres away from the hypogea above the highland. The survey and excavation of the external area identified at least three other tombs close to “domus de janas” 3.
The study of “domus” 3 has been addressed through a multidisciplinary approach. The archaeological investigation was supported by research carried out in other disciplines, such as geomorphology, lithology, pedology, petrology, palaeo-anthropology, archaeo-zoology and archaeo-botany. Palaeo-environmental studies were published by Rita Melis in vol. 3 of the series. In addition, C14 and DNA analyses have been carried out, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful due to the small dimensions and poor condition of the samples.
Stratigraphic data and analysis of materials have enabled the reconstruction of the stratigraphy of the hypogeum. It was excavated dug in the late Neolithic, and was subsequently reused in the middle - advanced Eneolithic (Monte Claro), in the late Eneolithic (Bell Beaker), in the early and middle Bronze Age and latterly in the Middle Ages. The discovery of a well preserved Bell Beaker context, which is datable to the last phase of Atzeni, is extremely interesting.
