Georges Rouault. Miserere et Guerre

The book examines Miserere (Rouault's graphic masterpiece and a summa of his oeuvre) with reference to the issues of religion and the memory of war experience, identifying it as the origin of a devotional and penitential style that in the mid-century years was to grant Rouault the definition of "greatest modern religious artist", but later on was to lead him to lose his position in the art-historical canon of the XXth century.
