The book deals with the public works in the Athenian Acropolis during the Periclean period. Special officials of the polis, called epistatai, were charged to supervise the works and at the end of the year they produced detailed accounts. The essay is based on those documents and on the literary sources. The study attempts to offer a new and complete analysis of the administrative rules regarding public works in the political context of the classical Athens.
