abstract:
The historical sub-region of Marmilla, in south-central Sardinia,
represents a particularly suitable case study for investigating the potential
arising from the tourism-oriented enhancement of its numerous geographical
specificities. The area preserves a widespread environmental and cultural
heritage spanning multiple domains—from archaeology to religious traditions—
expressed through museums, archaeological areas, monumental sites,
urban and rural churches, together with a dense fabric of practices, festivals,
and events deeply rooted in local identity. These elements, historically connected
to a predominantly agricultural and pastoral vocation, can today be
placed at the core of sustainable tourism strategies and products focused
on the discovery of rural culture and landscapes. This contribution aims to
map and reconnect, from a geographical perspective, the tangible and intangible
resources of Marmilla, highlighting their potential in the development of
itineraries and innovative development solutions. The overall objective is to
strengthen the attractiveness of a peripheral, rural, and inner area endowed
with a territorial capital of significant value, albeit still largely underutilized.
