This article reflects on the role of new speakers in the future of the languages of Sardinia and Corsica. Through three exemplary portraits and the model developed by Corsican sociolinguist Marina Branca, it distinguishes four types of speakers, arguing that none represents the "ideal" speaker: neither the native speaker, confined by diglossia to a limited and informal use of the language, nor the new speaker, whose competence remains uncertain. Addressing the phenomena of koineization, impostor syndrome, and the paradox of language certification, the author maintains that the "normal" speaker is a goal to be achieved by all. The future of minority languages belongs to those who speak them and, above all, to those who pass them on.
