Conference Paper

I senatori africani: Aggiornamenti / Mastino, Attilio; Ibba, Antonio. - 11:(2014), pp. 353-385. (Intervento presentato al convegno XIXe Rencontre sur l'épigraphie du Monde Romain tenutosi a Roma nel 21-23 marzo 2013).
abstract:
Mireille Corbier’s and Marcel Le Glay’s studies produced the identification of 164 families coming from the African
provinces. The investigations have added to this group other 77 families mostly originating from Proconsularis (64) and
to a lesser extent from Numidia (10) and Mauretania Caesariensis (3); 10 families, inserted by the two authors in their
sylloges must be eliminated because their coming from other sides of the empire has been proved. Most of the families
entered the Roman Senate in the second and third centuries, whereas the number of senators decreases in Severian age.
The evidences concerning the Late Roman Empire amount to 47 examples. These viri clarissimi often married rich
women, daughters of members of the equestrian order, consolidating the primacy in their patria in this way too
