La guerra del fin del mundo by Mario Vargas Llosa has many historical and literary sources. The latter category includes Il Gattopardo by Tomasi di Lampedusa. Purpose of this study is to analyze the two works, in the belief that a comparative analysis allow to grasp more perspicuously the process of modernization in two peripheral realities of the world system  nineteenth-century Brazil and Sicily  issue is the center of both novels
