The blow-up is a photographic process, the alteration of forms and dimensions of the same representation, oriented to highlight it, to emphasize one aspect of it. It is what happens to the image of immigration: the blow-up of the foreign presence in Italy is focused on the emergency, the security and a "naturally" problematic vision of the phenomenon. This chapter describes the design of a national research on media representation of immigration and asylum, that has been developed in the Department of Communication and Social Research of Sapienza University.
