The expressions «electronic village» and «global village» belong to the work of
Marshall McLuhan. This short essay discusses the tendency of globalization to
reduce distances and to interconnect cultures and social and economic spaces.
In the 1990s, this process was called spatial and temporal compression. Social
research has shown how this process of increasing interconnectedness has not
been without tensions and anxieties.
