The text of the fragment IB of the Panegyric in prose by Flavius Merobaudes
appears to be extremely compromised. Especially lines 19 ff. raise very hard exegetic difficulties.
Yet, it could be possible to reconstruct a satisfactory sense, and also, all prudence
granted, to advance a hypothesis of some coherent supplements to the text on the basis of a
close comparison with Quint. Inst. 8, 3, 61 ss., where the Author, in the ambit of ornatus,
deals with enargeia, repraesentatio, euidentia, that is, the skill to impress on the narration the
emphasis and liveliness of an immediate vision.
