The present volume is based on lectures given at the course held in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy, from 31 May to 10 June 1999 on ‘Desertification in Europe: Mitigation Strategies, Land Use Planning’. With the adoption of the International Convention to Combat Desertification, which represents a follow up of the Rio recommendations, this publication is timely.
