Abstract:
At the hilltop site of Monte Sirai, which has been investigated since the early 1960s, evidence from the recent excavations
has shed new light on the settlement dynamics between the late Iron Age and the Roman Republican period. Particularly
relevant is the new evidence that points to continuity throughout the Punic period, which downplays the traditional interpretation
of a major destruction event following Carthaginian conquest. It is suggested that this 5th-century phase has long been
overlooked because of two distinct phases of urban re-planning that took place at the site in the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.
