abstract:
In the Twentieth century the Italian Communist Party (Pci) used a great deal of ideological instruments like illustrated magazines, comics, children’s publications to get consensus. In the first two decades socialists were skeptical about the need to involve children into proletarian struggles, but during fascist regime underground comic books, magazines, periodicals for youth expressed a clear Marxist orientation aimed at propaganda and rebellion. A variety of different initiatives and publications started after the collapse of Mussolini government and showed the dilemmas and contradictions of the fight between Marxist orthodoxy and consumerist and commercial world. A new idea of sexuality, of use of free time, of music, and modern fashion weakened certainties and utopias during the 1950s. The “curriculum” conceived for the young Communists was forced to succumbed to internal and external pressures of the end of the Cold War.
