«The Experiment Must Be Undertaken, the Foundation Must Be Attempted». Notes on the
Hypothetic-Experimental Method of a Religion of Reason · « The experiment must be undertaken,
the foundation must be attempted » : these words testify to the crucial role played by the hypothetic-
experimental method in the decisive pages of Religion of Reason chapter 11, where the religious
point of view has to legitimate itself towards the sociological one, and religion has to establish
its own « foundations ». The fact that the key concept of Grundlegung, in the whole work,
only here occurs so frequently shows how Cohen entrusts his « non-foundationalist account of
‘foundations’ » with the task of promoting a « reflexive appropriation of religious contents ».
