In some contexts, when used as an attribute of waters, the Latin adjective purpureus
does not “purple” or sim., as it is commonly interpreted, but it can mean “seething”,
“rough”, “foaming” (see, e.g., Verg. georg. iv 273; Prop. ii 26a, 5), on the model of the
Homeric use of porphyreos (see, e.g., Il. i 482; xvi 391).
