abstract:
The necessity to “revive the minor historic centers” is a complex
issue which currently compares to depopulation; do we have to conserve or
transform our centers in order to re-inhabit them? The response will serve to direct
their future management with the aim of protecting and implementing the potential
for use. The creation of normative tools often occurs in a summary way, with an
inconsistent approach to protection, due to reduced resources and time, and with
superfi cial and repetitive assessments, often adopting standard methodologies in
different realities.
On the contrary, it would be necessary to operate on the urban and architectural
scale to devise design choices which enhance the “historic center” and protect the
building stock.
In recent decades, a stereotyped model of reconstruction of traditional architecture
has often been adopted, even with types that never locally existed.
On the other hand, we can observe an unjustifi ed priori rejection towards the recovery
of these architectures: we can recorded innumerable cases of potentially
reinhabitable but abandoned buildings due to the absence of useful functions and
services in the town center.
The historical knowledge of the village about its constructive stratifi cations is the
fi rst needed act for its conservation and innovation; it is necessary to deeply understand
the richness of historical heritage and the criticalities of incongruous changes
and it allows to adopt improving choices for recovery and to reject the simple implementation
of volumes.
In this way the “Piano Particolareggiato” of the hilly town of Calangianus (Sassari)
aims to be a tool for rediscovering the building stock, to be valued and reused pursuing
its conservation, transformation and redevelopment, mitigating incongruous
alterations and protecting material and constructive local values.
