abstract:
Field control of industrial tomato bacterial spot in Sardinia.
The efficacy of acibenzolar-S-methyl (CGA245704), a plant activator that induces systemic acquired resistance, in controlling bacterial spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) was evaluated on industrial tomato in field trials carried out in Sardinia in the period 2001-2002.
Treatments were performed by using both registered and experimental compounds. The efficacy of acibenzolar-S-methyl, alone or with copper hydroxide mixture, was compared with other chemicals. In particular, a better control of the disease was obtained by acibenzolar-S-methyl than using others bactericides. The lowest protection was provided by copper hydroxide. Its effectiveness was equivalent to that of phosethyl-Al. Hydroxyquinoline sulfate gave a control of bacterial spot statistically similar to the mixture acibenzolar-S-methyl/copper hydroxide. The mixture copper hydroxide-mancozeb gave a control of bacterial spot similar to phosethyl-Al. Finally, acibenzolar-S-methyl in combination with copper hydroxide did not offer better control of bacterial spot compared with acibenzolar-S-methyl used alone.
