abstract:
SUMMARY (Enter-Net: surveillance network for foodborne and waterborne diseases. Report 2007-2009) - “Enter-net Italia” is
a laboratory-based surveillance system coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, which collects data and strains
isolated by microbiology laboratories of the National Public Health Service. The report presents data on Salmonella, VTEC
and Campylobacter strains isolated from human infections in years 2007-2009. 11,714 strains of Salmonella and 1,802 of
Campylobacter were reported. S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, and its monophasic variant, S. 4,5,12:i:- were the more frequent
serotypes. The Haemolityc Uremic Syndrome (HUS) surveillance system reported an increase in the number of HUS
cases mainly associated with E. coli VTEC O157. The Enter-net Italia surveillance system also collects data on the isolation of
Salmonella from environmental sources, where S. Typhimurium e S. Veneziana represented the most prevalent serotypes.
Key words: Salmonella; verotoxigenic E. coli; Campylobacter
