Abstract:
The spatial analysis of the Phoenician and Punic necropolis of Monte Sirai, from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives between the late 7th and the first half of the 4th century BCE, allows for a reflection on the use of cemetery space in relation to the existence of kinship groups and family plots. The grouping of
burials into distinct clusters, along with the reuse of burial ground and individual pit tombs –often reopened for the interment of multiple individuals– reflects the “vitality” of areas dedicated to the deceased. The presence of stone markers and funerary monuments emerging from the necropolis’s ground level outlines a complex “ funerary landscape” that mirrors the structure of the society, especially during the urban development of the settlement between the late 6th and 5th centuries BCE
