La presenza straniera in una città turistica: il caso di Alghero (Sardegna-Italia)

Sardinia appears to stand apart compared to other regions of mainland Italy and its other islands as far as international migratory flows are concerned. The island does not exhibit the characteristics of a border region; it is undeniably a transit region, in other words, seldom a region of final destination. Sardinia is already experiencing a demographic problem: namely the ageing of its population. It was believed that replacement migration would solve the problem; however it appears that few foreigners are inclined to stay on the island, as they prefer to move as soon as possible to other areas, Italian and European, which provide better employment. Only mixed marriages could guarantee some sort of permanence and improve the demographic situation in Sardinia. In this article international migratory flows at Alghero (North-West Sardinia), one the most populated towns in Sardinia and an important tourist resort will be analysed.
